— Course Participant, Reach to Grasp, Salisbury 2024
Our foundation course. This one day, virtually delivered course, will introduce you to theories and principles of motor learning and recovery following stroke and neurological injury. We focus on understanding the evidence base, and share ideas for putting this into practice.
This course sets the scene! Although not essential, it’s great place to start before embarking on one of our practical stroke rehab courses.
Learning Outcomes:
Describe the processes underlying neurological recovery in someone with stroke
Critique current theory and evidence relating to motor learning in stroke
Understand the components of intensity in rehabilitation, their evidence, and their practical application
Apply theories of behaviour change, to support the delivery of intensive rehabilitation
Describe the ways in which practice may be structured to maximise functional recovery
Recognise the role of the therapist as a coach, including the role of instruction and feedback in motor performance and motor learning
Apply and adapt current theory and evidence relating to motor learning to a range of clinical scenarios (e.g. those with profound weakness, cognitive and language impairment)
This two day course is delivered in person – with a small group of up to 24 participants. Our interactive sessions include a mix of theory, movement analysis using video recording, video case studies, evidence reviews, and workshops with people with stroke.
Learning Outcomes:
Describe the practice conditions required to facilitate motor learning following stroke
Understand the basic principles of biomechanics in relation to sit to stand and gait
Discuss research findings for the common impairments in sit to stand and gait, following stroke.
Use a systematic approach in the assessment of sit to stand and gait in order to determine an accurate and specific problem list
Identify targeted interventions to improve sit to stand and gait, grounded in a sound understanding of motor learning
Apply best available evidence to effectively train someone with impaired sit to stand and/or gait following stroke – including strategies to increase rehabilitation intensity.

Learning Outcomes:
Describe the practice conditions required to facilitate motor learning following stroke
Understand the basic principles of biomechanics in relation to reach to grasp
Identify common impairments in upper limb function following stroke
Use a systematic approach in the assessment of reach to grasp, in order to determine an accurate and specific problem list
Identify targeted interventions to improve reach to grasp, grounded in a sound understanding of motor learning principles.
Apply best available evidence to effectively train someone with impaired reach to grasp following stroke – including a range of priming techniques and strategies to increase rehabilitation intensity.

We are a team of experienced therapists, with backgrounds in clinical practice, education and research. We love to share our knowledge and skills in practical and applied ways – supporting your professional development – and ultimately improving the delivery of evidence based rehabilitation for people recovering from neurological conditions.
Louise is an NHS Consultant Physiotherapist in Stroke Rehabilitation and a Principal Researcher at the University of Southampton.
She has considerable experience in developing clinical services, both within the UK and further afield. A strong advocate for clinically embedded research, Louise is engaged in multiple research programmes, teaches at several universities and has presented work nationally and internationally.
Louise has expertise in applied motor learning principles (including rehabilitation intensity), technology, implementation science and personalised care.
